Roger's School Nutrition Study

The objective of the Grenada School Nutrition Project project is to decrease the probability of the adoption of an obesogenic lifestyle among adolescents in Grenada, West Indies. In order to advance this goal, it is necessary to understand individual student characteristics and behaviours, as well as the school and community environment throughout Grenada. This information can then be used to inform health and education policies. The projectobtained the targeted information and disseminated that information to other researchers, educators, healthcare providers, and policy makers in Grenada and throughout the Caribbean region. Specifically, results indicate that adolescents  in Grenada are adopting behaviours that support an obesogenic lifestyle. There appears to be a significant difference in obesity rates between adults and adolescents in Grenada. The low rates of overweight and obesity among Form 1 (i.e., 11-14 year-old) adolescents indicate that these youth have not yet been affected by social determinants of the obesity epidemic. Accelerometry data from the study indicates that caloric intake may explain the lower risk ofoverwieght and obesity in Grenadian adolescents. Evidence indicates that adult (age 18+) obesity rates in Grenada are similar to those in the US, especially among adult Grenadian females (Block, Dozier, Hazel-Fernandez, Guido, Pearson, 2012). Thus, the research team estimates thatthe transition to obesity takes place somewhere between the ages of 14-18. The team is now seeking further funding to follow the Form 1 students longitudinally, to determine the exact timing and causes of the transition to overweight and obesity.
